Frequently Asked Questions » Domain Names
If I register a domain name, will my name and contact information be publically available?
Yes. Anyone who uses a whois tool will be able to find out your name, address and phone number. Filling in valid information is not optional, it is obligatory, to permit enforcment of consumer protection, trademark, etc... If you fill in false information, you run the risk of having your domain name "stolen" from you, since there is no proof it is yours.

The only exception to this rule is for .uk domain names: you have the option of hiding your address & phone number, however your name still remains.

However, GoDaddy now provides a private registration service: they will put their own contact information instead of yours. The current price is roughly $10/year.
