Maybe this is what they mean with (from the welcome mail): "It has come to our attention that some users connecting through some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) may encounter some difficulties with FTP. If you experiment difficulties, try to use another ISP."

Translation: "We are too lazy to make it work in all situations, but we disguise this lazyness by blaming the shortcomings on your ISP." Mad

There was a message on the portland mailing list yesterday which may / may not explain same of the login errors.

Quote:

From: "Justin Clements" <justin@portland.co.uk>
To: <portlandfreeweb@yahoogroups.com>
Subject: [portlandfreeweb] Database Restructuring
Date: 25 March 2002 18:08

The main Portland Database is currently offline, and will be until Thursday.

We have tried to do this in the background and we tried to take the db
offline 5-6 weeks ago. We got so much flack we gave up last time.

Unfortunately, time has caught us up and damage has been done to the db and
so the main Portland db is closed until Thursday.

Heres the list of disabled things:

FTP Free Accounts
Email Controller
Domain Controller
Statistics
Password Requests

Heres a list of the things that still work:

FTP Enhanced/Premium
SQL server
Portland SQL server
Web Servers

The long and short of it is, if you have a free account you will be unable
to change anything. Things still work, its just changes that won't.

If you have an Enhanced or Premium and need to change an email forwarding
then we'll do it by hand. Contact the office.

Have a happy week.

Regards,
Justin

Then they'd better quit, because it's better to get nothing for free while knowing you can't get anything for free, than to get nothing while thinking you can get something for free...

By the way, I already tried 2 times to cancel an f2g account by following the instructions in their mails, but it's no use... Not that it's a disaster that the account still exists, but I keep on getting their e-mails which I'm not interested in.
