Password sign in for website HOW?

I would like to have a User and Password Sign in/ Login in for a website what would be a resonably easy way to achieve this, I would like to have unique user names / passwords for each user so they could be managed

I suppose some kind of membership manager to a site would do

Any recomendations of scripts or other ways to achieve this?

edit- Needs to be free if software

Would editing a password file via FTP be a reasonable solution, or do you have lots of users?

Not a lot of users at the moment so it would do as a tempoary solution

BTW. I prefer the new look to the site, it looks more slick and user friendly now
