I'm not on line but want to learn php

I am not on-line at home but wish to learn php. I have tried using dreamweaver to set up a dummy server but doesn't seem to work.

Has anyone used dreamweaver in this way - is there something I am doing wrong.

Dreamweaver (any version) is simply a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML page editor. It does that and nothing more. What you need is a web server installed (like Apache), and PHP. Amadeus' tutorial explains all this, at http://www.4webhelp.net/tutorials/cgi/local.php

Set up a linux server. You'll get apache, MySQL, and PHP is most standard linux distributions. I'm running mine on an old 200MHz box. Shocked

So you don't need much of an investment.

Best case would be to set up a small network, with any old box running linux as your server, then you can still use Dreamweaver, or whatever other software that you have, to develop the front-end web pages.

You should set-up Web server on your system manually. You can download Apache from http://www.apache.org/. Apache is available for *nix as well as Win* machines.

Other Web servers as well as useful resources are:

I use phpdev423 on Windows 2000 Pro, which installs Apache, MySQL and phpmyadmin.

I then use Dreamweaver MX to create the site (under Site Definitions) with it's PHP/MySQL connector and can author/test on the Apache server before uploading. Works a treat. Smile
