I have a small amount of DB experience, and have just started looking at concurrency issues. Could anyone offer and overview of locking in MySQL, and how to use it in a web environment?

Thanks in advance,

I don't know much about these things either, but I do know that all the PHP & MySQL scripts I have looked at do not use locking (even big ones like phpBB). I don't know if that's because it's not necessary in MySQL, or whether it's because their authors don't think it's needed.

Is this like the flock() function for file handleing in PHP or am I missing the point?

Yes, it's something to that effect: you can "lock" tables to prevent reading and/or writing.
