I'm sure a lot of you will already know about this, but some won't, so I thought I should post a topic about it.

phpBB 2.0.x, the current branch of phpBB is no longer being "added to": it is feature frozen, and all the releases (2.0.5 should be the last as long as no new security issues are found) are now only bug fixes.

phpBB 2.2, however, is the next version of phpBB. With it, many features will be added, such as subforums, attachments, topic merging, PM forwarding, an improved template/styles system, and much much more!

There is a very useful recap post at the phpBB forums here: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=72574, as well as the most recent post by psoTFX, the lead developer: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=88651.

Of course, don't waste your time pointing out bugs, this is an alpha version of phpBB, nowhere near release. For those wondering why it says 2.1 and not 2.2, 2.2 will be the release version, whereas 2.1 is the development version.

Where can I try it out? http://phpbb.sourceforge.net/cvs/
Note that the installation file probably won't work, so it's really just for "messing around" Wink

Oh, BTW, while I'm talking about phpBB I thought I should mention that phpBB is one of the 5 nominees for the Webby Award in the Technical Achievement category. Other nominees are Apache, Linux and Google Smile. To vote, visit http://www.webbyawards.com/peoplesvoice/. Last I heard phpBB was behind Google but ahead of Apache and Linux Cool.

The Usual bunch of stolen features from the competition as all boards do from each other, and a version of PHPBB that actually looks worse than the one that is out now, the skin is worse.

The skin is going to be redesigned, that is actually just an effort by psoTFX to make it look different from 2.0 (so that people realise it's 2.2 Very Happy).

As to stealing features:

It's been a while since the last update and given "other" boards are heading towards new versions (with many of 2.2's features "suddenly" added it seems )

That's an unprofessional comment, and if you think bout it, all boards steal each others features all the time, phpbb have done it, so has everyone!

I think the skin sucks.

Just an off-topic anecdote: phpBB invented the concept of having a choice of templates on forums. Before that everyone had to stick to the one and only template which was installed on that particular board Sad.

As to unprofessional, well they're not actually a business, so Razz I can understand his frustration though; when you create something you never like other people using your ideas. But then I guess that's how bulletin boards as a whole progress. Without people pinching ideas we'd probably still be using BBs without smilies, BBcode, private messaging, profiles, notifications, search... and the list goes on Smile.
