Is PostgreSQL worth the effort of learning it? I'm already familiar with MySQL, and was wondering whether PostgreSQL is everything it's cracked up to be. Does it offer any major advantages over MySQL? Any general opinions? Any good (and cheap) hosts (like Cyberwings) that run that database server?

PostgreSql was OpenSource far earlier than MySql, so at first it was more popular with the Linux groups.

It is a more reliable database under load, giving fewer "Too Many Connections" errors than MySql. It also supports transactions (which I think MySql now has). But it is a bit slower than MySql.

Somewhere I heard that PostgreSql is the real webmasters database, but I think that title is diminishing. MySql is by far the more popular these days.

It does support the regular SQL commands with a few unusual exceptions, so there is not much to learn. It might be handy to have in your toolbox!

If anybody's interested, http://www.phpbuilder.com/columns/tim20000705.php3 has a comparison. Since I've already registered with CyberWings.com, it makes no real difference because MySQL is the only option I have.

It's kinda like comparing Linux to Windows, they both do pretty much the same thing, but they do it in different ways.

Really down to personal preference.

Except that there is a MUCH bigger difference between Windows & Linux than there is between mySQL and postgreSQL!

Well there is a bit of a difference between the two (Windows & Linux), but fundamentally they both are operating systems, offer GUIs and both have their pros and cons.

Definately their code-bases are very different, like any database system, but yet they both try to satisfy the same demand & offer the same functionality
