I created some custom error pages using the excellent tutorial at http://webxtractions.com/tutorials/error.php. The error pages worked with Netscape 4 but not with IE5.5. If this happens to you, it's not a bug but an IE "feature". If you click Tools/Internet Options and select the Advanced tab and then uncheck the "Show friendly HTTP error messages", the custom error pages will work.

Just wanted to add to that: if your error page is bigger than x bytes (can't remember the figure), then IE will not replace it with it's own error message.
