hi, all

How should a site be assessed to know whether it is successful as far as search engine rankings are concerned?

What is considered a good ranking?

I guess that would depend on the topic of your site. For something that's got a lot of results (e.g. "HTML" with over 11 billion results on Google) you might count yourself as successful to get in the first hundred pages, whereas for something more obscure you might expect to be in the first two or three.

A better measure than looking at your ranking might be to analyse your stats (e.g. with Webalizer) and see which percentage of visitors are finding you via search engines.

A successful site is one that ranks high enough for its chosen search
terms that it gets sufficient visitors to achieve the objective that you
had in setting up the site in the first place.

good ranking is consider with in the 1st page of any search engine results page... Normally searches dont bother looking further then 3 pages of any search....
