I'm looking for a shared hosting for my personal/local interest website. The reason being that I am not happy with the constant downtime and reboot of my current provider - Not an uncommon story I agree.

I have searched the web for a new company that meets my requirments, and as I have been stung before all the companies I found I have done a search on google for to see what is said.

I am dammed if I can find one good provider out there.

There must be one? somewhere? maybe?

Can anyone help me, my requirements:

I run a php-nuke site with photo gallerys so

500Mb disk (currently using 300)
500Mb Bandwidth (again currently using just under 300)
PHP, mySQL
pop/webmail with forwarders/responders
a few subdomains
SSH would be nice but I could manage
A uk company might be a benefit ?

I'm looking for spend around £100 - £200 p/a

I'll say thanks, but forgive me if I don't hold my breath Smile

Hello Paul,

Have you looked at http://www.webattention.net ? they offer a great standard package inc:-

Storage Space 500 Mb
Bandwidth Allowance 5 Gb

Plus all the other things you mentioned and a lot more, also based in the U.K.

They also offer great support.

Mart.

http://www.hostforweb.com
http://www.hostingmatters.com
http://www.economicalhost.com

I have tried all 3 of them. Sites of myself and my friends and my clients run on these. They are pretty good.

It looks like I may have to be hosted in the USA as this is where the savings seem to be made, does anyone have an opinion on CWIHosting?

They were ranked above UH on this poll : http://www.theworldjournal.com/special/nettech/tophosts.htm

I am not a client of this hosting company, but they seem excellent and responded very quickly to a sales question I had.

http://www.hosting-unlimited.net

Try browsing their forums too:

http://www.hosting-unlimited.net/forums

I am thinking of joining them this September when my hosting runs out with a different company.

Anyway, let me know how you get on,

Mike

Your needs look very minimal for a person willing to spend a lot of money for web hosting. I'm thinking of buying their premier package, but anyway, here's a package that might suit you at hosting-unlimited.net.

Basic Package - Only £20 p.a. (.co.uk, .com - extra £10 a year)
===========================================
500 MB Web space
3,000 MB Monthly Bandwidth
5 POP E-mail accounts
Unlimited E-mail forwarders
3 Subdomains
PHP4
3 MySQL databases

I think there is also the option to park/addon up to 10 domains to your account for free.

Price £20 p.a // no hidden fees
===========================================

Just have a look at it. If you do sign up, tell me what they are like Smile

If you want an example of a site hosted on UH, check out http://www.freedom2support.net, not had any downtime since I have been with them from March, customer service and support is first chance, they are US based, but very good.

Now Now!

I post a valid question that I am sure a great deal of people would like to know the answer , where do you go for good hosting?

I would rather pay a good/fair price for redundancy and good CS than get the cheapest deal, but if I cheap offer comes with the above then I am interested.

I am not interested in someone reselling me something they have no control over as when things go wrong I'd like to talk to the right people

[hope that didn't sound bad, just got back froma friday pub lunch]

Check out your site (very good BTW) and speed certainly doesn't seem to be an issue.

With the research I have done - google searches for bad press etc, the running in my opinion is UnitedHosting seems to be the winner although CWI have a 100% uptime guarantee they do get slated a bit in google.

So I think we have a winner United Hosting !!!

anyone want to stop me before I sign up?

Venturesonline has always come highly recommended for those who are willing to spend the money (they're more expensive than most). They're not in the UK though...

http://www.venturesonline.com/

Of course an obvious one (to me at least Very Happy) is 34SP, this site's host, but I've also had personal experience with them: the prices aren't rock bottom, but support and uptime are very good, and they're a UK host with servers in the UK too Smile.

http://www.34sp.com/

Lastly, I can also recommend one of my own site's hosts, EcpHosting. Nothing to complain about with them, but no SSH (they've got a strong focus on security).

Hi Daniel

I wondered if you would show up, I dont know you, but have come to respect your voice on the forum, anyways, 34sp don't meet my requirements on their orderform and dont seem to offer any plans other than their default + click for more options - not customer focused in my eye.

ecp seem ok, but UH still have the torch I think

Well, you're lucky I showed up (I'm on holiday Very Happy) Razz

As to 34SP, well, if they don't suit you, that's fine. Go with whatever suits you best - there is no "best host", that's why I find polls which ask "Which is the best host?" silly Laughing.

As to UnitedHosting, all I know is that it has a good reputation Smile.
